I awoke moments later to a cold sensation on my cheek. I pushed myself to a sitting position only to find myself sitting alone in the garden. Surrounded by butterflies and red flowers dancing in the wind. How mature Thane⦠falling asleep on Rosalia in the middle of the day. But that nap didnât even scratch the surface of my fatigue. It only intensified it. I ran a hand through my hair and rolled my neck.
Unfortunately, my problems didnât subside either. I could hear my motherâs voice and saw her silhouette just beyond the glass doors to the palace. If I were to walk through that door, I would be trapped.
With half a brain, I assessed my options. My room was situated on the second floor of the palace, a few feet from where I sat in the garden. I needed to avoid roaming around the first floor entirely. I surveyed the tree that reached the balcony of my room.
Without thinking and doing something so incredibly stupid, I rushed over to the tree and climbed it. It didnât take me long. I swung my leg over the railing and crashed into one of my plants. My entire body ached, but I kept myself pinned to the ground when I heard the door to the garden open just below my balcony.
âWhere is this boy? I thought I saw him sleeping on the bench. Did I raise a baboon?â My motherâs voice was loud and aggravating as I could hear her footsteps retreat. It sounded like she was talking to someone, but I couldnât decipher who it was. My mother walked back inside and closed the door behind her. Until I knew she was gone, I stood and peered over the balconyâs edge. The stupid things I do when half asleep is ridiculous.
I crouched over to my door and hit the button on the panel. The door gave way, whistling as it slid open. At last, some tranquility and solitude.
I rubbed my head and took a deep breath. I flicked on the lock all doors function on the panel that rested on my wall. Automatically every door to my room was locked. No one and I mean no one, would disturb me.
Perhaps I could spare a few minutes and figure out another way to find my father and sister. I sat at my desk and cleared everything in sight. I felt around the ridges of the furniture to find a lever. I tugged it, and the top of the desk cranked open. I removed the lid. Engraved on the rough surface were tally marks.
Over one hundred tally marks that marked every time I attempted something new but failed. I kept this hidden mainly from myself. The last thing I needed was a visible reminder of how many times I was unsuccessful. I grabbed a knife from my drawer and carved another tally into the wood amongst the others.
I placed the thin piece of wood back on the desk and covered the markings. I rested my head against the cool surface and closed my eyes.
